Tulsa Airport International Customs Facility

Ribbon Cutting

Tulsa took a major step onto the international stage this month with the official ribbon-cutting of the new International Customs Facility at Tulsa International Airport, a milestone project that will allow nonstop commercial international flights from Tulsa for the first time in the airport’s history.

Community leaders, elected officials, aviation partners, and project collaborators gathered on May 7, 2026, to celebrate the opening of the 45,000-square-foot customs facility, which expands the airport’s international capabilities while positioning Tulsa for continued economic and tourism growth. The event included remarks from airport leadership, local and state officials, project partners, live music, and commemorative giveaways.

While U.S. Customs and Border Protection has operated at Tulsa International Airport for decades, services had previously been limited to cargo and general aviation operations. The new facility now allows the airport to process commercial international passengers directly in Tulsa, eliminating the need for connecting customs stops in larger hub cities.

The announcement also comes with immediate impact for travelers. Beginning May 21, Tulsa International Airport will launch nonstop seasonal service to Cancun, Mexico, operating twice weekly through August 9.

Airport leadership framed the project as the result of years of long-range planning and regional collaboration.

“For the first time ever, Tulsa travelers will be able to board an international flight right here at home. This milestone reflects years of thoughtful planning and a shared vision to better connect Tulsa to the world.”

Mayor Monroe Nichols IV described the project as more than an airport expansion—calling it a signal of Tulsa’s continued growth and momentum on a national and global level.

Designed to streamline passenger processing while supporting future international air service growth, the facility incorporates advanced screening technology, operational flexibility, and expanded infrastructure to meet current demand and support long-term airport development.

For Narrate Design, the project reflects the broader role infrastructure can play in shaping regional identity and connectivity. Working alongside Flintco, the team helped deliver a facility that balances operational performance with a welcoming passenger experience—an important first impression for international travelers arriving in Tulsa.

The approximately $41 million project has been part of Tulsa International Airport’s long-range capital improvement plan since 2016 and was funded through a combination of Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust resources and Federal Aviation Administration grants.

As Tulsa International Airport continues expanding routes and partnerships, the new customs facility represents both a practical investment in transportation infrastructure and a symbolic one — opening new pathways between Tulsa and the world.
