Early Childhood Center

Growing and Strengthening the St. Eugene Campus

As the Catholic School of St. Eugene continues to grow, the campus is expanding to better serve its youngest learners. This project adds much-needed classroom space in a new Early Childhood Center, creating learning environments specifically designed for pre-K education while supporting the school’s long-term vision for growth.

Beyond providing additional space, the expansion strengthens the overall identity of the campus. Because the church and school have evolved over several decades, the existing buildings reflect a variety of architectural styles. The new addition draws inspiration from both, creating a cohesive design that ties the campus together and establishes a stronger sense of place for students, families, and parishioners.

Designed for Safety, Learning, and Everyday Discovery

Every aspect of the expansion is designed to support the unique needs of early learners. The new facility includes six age-appropriate classrooms, small group instruction spaces, a multipurpose room for lunch and indoor activities, and dedicated outdoor areas for learning and play. Together, these spaces create a flexible environment that supports both structured learning and exploration throughout the day.

Safety and well-being were central to the design. A secure entry sequence, clear sightlines, and carefully planned circulation help create a protected environment for students while providing confidence and peace of mind for families and staff. The building also includes a staff work area that doubles as a storm shelter, providing safe refuge for up to 120 occupants when needed.

Inside, the learning environment is intentionally calm and welcoming. Soft colors, natural light, and thoughtfully selected finishes create spaces that feel comfortable, nurturing, and scaled to young children—supporting focus, confidence, and a positive early learning experience.

Planning for the Future

The success of the expansion began with thoughtful planning. Early site analysis and traffic studies helped identify the best location for the new facility while improving campus circulation, parking, and pedestrian safety. These efforts ensured the addition would feel like a natural extension of the existing church and school campus rather than a standalone building.

The project also creates opportunities beyond the new Early Childhood Center itself. As programs move into the expanded facility, existing spaces across the campus can be reimagined and repurposed to better support students, staff, parishioners, and future growth. This strategic approach allows St. Eugene to make the most of its resources while creating a more organized, functional, and connected campus for years to come.
