Adaptive Reuse

City Church hosts a 10-year-old congregation that has never had a permanent home… until now. Breathing new life into a building that has had many iterations, from big box store to community college, this renovated church is now prepared to welcome long-time parishioners with plenty of room to grow the flock.

The existing building, located just off I44 and Peoria, has had several past lives and sat abandoned, wasting away for years, until the owner saw its potential not only as a new home for the congregation but as a catalyst for the revitalization of the underserved neighborhood. The old building shell was given a new lease on life, creating an airy, inviting entry point to the building and serving as an advertisement for the new congregation toward the adjacent highway and city.

RADICAL HOSPITALITY

It is immediately clear that this is a welcoming environment—to the congregation, the surrounding neighborhood, and people passing through. Large front windows open up to allow visibility into the bright lobby and lounge spaces, greeting the community and inviting them in.

The lobby guides visitors into the sanctuary where services are supported by a stage, custom communion table, and three massive floor-to-ceiling screens that allow messaging and imagery to enhance the Word.

Gathering spaces allow for lingering after services, engaging with the church community, and providing a place for local community activities. From religious education and group dinners to neighborhood missions, there is room in and around the building to accommodate every church-related gathering.

CITY KIDS

Children’s needs are an integral part of this City Church’s design, from the play area in the lobby to City Kids which offers childcare for children 6 weeks old through 5th Grade. The children’s spaces are filled with bright colors, soft seating, and an abundance of room for them to experience age-appropriate programming. A private and peaceful Nursing Mother’s Room is also available near the Nursery area.
