Recruiting and retaining top-level science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students is serious business at any university. To heighten the challenge, OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) lacked a dedicated facility to not only impress prospective students and their parents but also serve as a student resource center and gathering place to support students throughout their intensive studies.

We worked with both administrators and students to define OSU’s vision for their new Center.

Connecting Students

Working with the existing circular geometries of the building, we transformed an existing block of offices into an open, inviting, and interactive center that captures the forward-thinking, high-tech spirit of CEAT students.

The student lounge takes advantage of abundant daylighting and offers a variety of seating from individual study stations and group study tables to comfortable couches with a living room feel. Power and charging outlets are located in abundance to accommodate the technology needs of today’s students. Students now gather, study, and socialize in their own personalized space.

Counseling, career advisement, tutoring, and conference areas are also part of the Student Success Center. Although these spaces are more private in nature, frameless glass walls maximize transparency and connectivity to one another and to the student lounge.

Changes in flooring and ceiling throughout clearly define individual spaces and circulation zones. Materials and furnishings are attractive and durable to take the wear and tear of the daily grind.
