The people behind PAAS (pronounced “paws”) are on a mission to save the lives of stray cats and dogs by finding caring homes for them. Knowing it takes more than compassion to make a difference, they engaged Selser Schaefer Architects – and entrusted us with their vision for what architecture could allow them to achieve.
The result is a new, “no-kill” shelter in Vinita, Oklahoma, that brings pet lovers and animals together in an atmosphere so welcoming, it feels like the pets are halfway home. The facility’s simple, farmhouse aesthetic reflects the small-town America feel of the surrounding community. Colorful images of animals draw you into the entrance, where two “get acquainted” adoption rooms help people and pets picture the possibilities. Natural light washes away any institutional feel from the adoption kennel areas, which include viewing windows at various heights. Kennel placement, soundproofing materials and excellent ventilation add to the peaceful environment.
The shelter has a very practical side, as well. Drawing on our experience designing award-winning animal welfare facilities, we set the stage for a modern, smooth-running clinic, built to Humane Society guidelines. Every detail supports the mission of the shelter’s visionary owners: to help stray animals find their way into a loving home.
