When H-E-B said they wanted to break benchmarks for sustainability with their Market at Mueller, first we applauded —then rolled up our sleeves. In collaboration with Lake|Flato and H-E-B, Selser Schaefer Architects helped implement the first propane refrigeration system in a grocery store in the nation. We cut potable water consumption by 60% and made daylighting sufficient to leave the lights off 93% of the time. The resulting project was selected from 3300 entries from around the world to receive AIA/COTE 2016 Top Ten recognition for architecture that protects and enhances the environment.
