For years, home improvement has been dominated by orange and blue. There’s a new color in town — green. Few people realize that residential buildings are among the top users of energy, water, and other resources as well as a leading producer of waste, CO2, and toxins. TreeHouse is a home upgrade company with a mission to make our homes beautiful, healthy, smart, and sustainable.
This new store, an adaptive re-use of an existing retail space, borrows from a Texas residential rather than a commercial aesthetic, and is itself a model of sustainability.
Large areas of brick and precast concrete walls were torn down to let in more light. All of the brick was carefully removed, reclaimed, and reused.
Clerestory windows and 60+ skylights absolutely fill the store with light, reducing the lighting load.
Integrated fans with heat sensors kick on to move air through the store, reducing the need for HVAC.
A large section of the roof was removed to create an outdoor retail space and reconnect customers with nature.
