“Since February 2022, we have met with and listened to residents, workers, and key stakeholders via focus groups and one-on-one conversations to learn more about what makes this unique space special to Tulsans.”

Center of the Universe

Downtown Tulsa Partnership + City of Tulsa

Opened in the early 1980s, the Boston Avenue Pedestrian Bridge—better known as the Center of the Universe—is a defining civic space and a must-visit landmark in Downtown Tulsa. Each day, it serves as a vital passage for hundreds of employees and a gathering spot for countless others.

What truly sets this place apart is its mysterious acoustic phenomenon. Stand in the center, make a sound, and you’ll hear it echo back to you—amplified far beyond its original volume. This private echo chamber has baffled experts for years, with no clear consensus on the cause of its sonic distortion. Regardless of the mystery, the effect is undeniably fascinating.

However, in recent years, the plaza’s condition has declined, failing to live up to its potential as a welcoming urban destination. It’s time to reimagine the Center of the Universe.
