Born out of a shared passion for design and a desire to create something truly their own, co-workers Janet and Bob recognized their complementary strengths and mutual vision for architecture that prioritizes storytelling, innovation, and client-focused solutions. They took a leap of faith, stepping out to establish a firm where they could shape projects from the ground up, ensuring that each design reflected not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of the people and communities it would serve. What began as a small, ambitious practice has since grown into a recognized leader in the industry, known for thoughtful, impactful designs that bring spaces to life. Their founding vision continues to guide our team today, inspiring us to push boundaries, embrace creativity, and remain committed to excellence in every project we undertake.

People-First Design

When you’re passionate about your work, it’s because you know the “why” behind it. As you go through your day, you’re constantly aware of that one reason you do what you do. It’s the motivation that drives you to keep looking for ways to do things better. It’s how you own your story.

As Selser Schaefer Architects grew through the years, it became clear that the firm was different in how we worked with our clients and approached architecture. As architects, it would be easy to assume our “why” is great design… the next big idea, the smarter use of space. But it goes much deeper. Our founders believed that great design is nothing without people to experience it, interact with it—and connect with each other because of it.

As it turned out, people are our why. We began to call it “people-first design” and it grew to become a promise to our clients, our community, and each other.

New Owners in 2017

In 2017, a partner group assumed ownership of the firm while Janet and Bob transitioned to mentorship roles and looked toward retirement. Partners Shane D. Aaron, Hank Spieker, and Whitney Stauffer took the reigns and spent the next several years planning for the future. As they considered how the firm could rise to meet tomorrow’s challenges, it became clear that we needed a new name that reflected where we were headed—a name that captured the firm’s collaborative spirit and thoughtful approach.

Rebranding the Firm

In 2023, Selser Schaefer Architects became Narrate Design. The new name articulates the parallels between storytelling and architectural design. It succinctly captures the idea that with every project, we create environments that tell your story with purpose, clarity, and a distinct point of view.

The singular name broadens our brand, giving it room to encompass our entire scope of services—architecture, interiors, and planning.

We are excited about where this change will take us. Whatever lies ahead, one thing is clear: people will remain at the heart of every story and at the center of every design.
